Ask a Librarian

Searching

  • Function terminology varies by Chadwyck-Healey database. Multiple terms are included for some steps in this guide.
  1. Select database from the UW-Madison Libraries Web site.
  2. Click SEARCH.
  3. Type a word or phrase in the KEYWORD(S) or ALL KEYWORDS or KEYWORD box.
    (Optional) Narrow the search by typing a word or phrase in one or more of the other search boxes.
  4. Click SEARCH.

Combining Terms

Use OR to connect similar terms. OR broadens your search.

Example: opera or operetta

Use AND to connect separate concepts. AND narrows your search.

Example: opera and French

Truncating Terms

Use * to replace one or more characters at the end of a search term.

Example: oper* (retrieves opera, operetta, operate)

Proximity Searching

Use near.# to find words within a specified number (#) of words of one another, regardless of the order in which they appear.

Example: music near.3 lessons (retrieves music lessons, lessons in music, music improves with lessons)

Combining Search Sets

Note: Not available in all Chadwyck-Healey databases.

  1. Click SEARCH HISTORY.
  2. Enter the numbers of the two searches to combine.
  3. Select the required Boolean operator (AND, OR, NOT) from the drop down box.
  4. Click on COMBINE SEARCHES.

Author Searching

  1. Click in the DOCUMENT AUTHOR or AUTHOR/REVIEWER or AUTHOR or CONTRIBUTOR or PSEUDONYM box and type the author's last name and first name or initial, if known.
  2. Example: smith a

  3. Click SELECT FROM A LIST or BROWSE, if available.
  4. Click in the box to the left of desired matches or select desired matches.
  5. Click SELECT or OK.
  6. Click SEARCH.

Journal Searching

To find a specific article:

  1. Click in the TITLE KEYWORD(S) or ARTICLE TITLE or ARTICLE TITLE KEYWORD(S) box and type a word or phrase from the article title.
  2. Click in the JOURNAL or JOURNAL TITLE or PUBLICATION or JOURNAL TITLE(S) or PERIODICAL TITLE box and type in the name of the journal.
    (Optional) Type the year in the FROM and TO boxes of PUBLICATION YEAR or YEAR OF PUBLICATION or PUBLICATION DATE.
  3. Click SEARCH.

To browse a specific journal:

Note: Not available in all Chadwyck Healey databases.

  1. Click BROWSE JOURNALS or FIND JOURNALS.
  2. Click the alphabet letter corresponding to the first word of desired journal title.
  3. Click the journal title, if a link.
  4. Click FULL TEXT, if available.
  5. Click FINDIT to locate print or electronic copy of journal.

Displaying Search Results

  1. Use the SCROLL BAR to move through records on the page.
  2. Click NEXT or PREVIOUS or next page number to display more records.
  3. Click article title or FULL CITATION to display the full record.
  4. Click FULL TEXT to display the full text of the article, if available, or click FIND IT to find electronic or print copies of this item on campus.
  5. Click BACK TO RESULTS or BACK or BACK TO ARTICLE SEARCH RESULTS or BACK TO SEARCH RESULTS to return to the list of records.

Selecting Records

  1. Click in the box or @ to the left of desired record (s) or in the box to the left of ADD TO MARKED LIST next to desired record(s) to mark it for later printing, downloading or emailing.

Saving Search Results

Saving Selected Records

  1. Insert removable storage device (i.e. flash drive, memory stick, 3 1/2" disk ...) into a floppy drive.
  2. Click MARKED LIST or SELECTED RECORDS or DOWNLOAD SELECTED RECORDS.
  3. Click DOWNLOAD CITATIONS or DOWNLOAD.
  4. Click DOWNLOAD IN PLAIN TEXT FORMAT.
  5. Click OK.
  6. Type in drive, filename and extension.

    Example: a:myfile.txt

  7. Click SAVE.

Emailing Search Results

E-mailing Selected Records

  1. Click MARKED LIST or SELECTED RECORDS or SELECTED E-MAIL RECORDS or EMAIL SELECTED RECORDS.
  2. Click EMAIL RECORDS or EMAIL SELECTED RECORDS or EMAIL.
  3. Type in name and email address.
  4. Select desired FORMAT.
  5. Click SEND or SEND E-MAIL.

Beginning a New Search, Exiting, and Getting Help

Beginning a New Search

  1. Click SEARCH or NEW SEARCH or SEARCH ARTICLES or ARTICLE SEARCH or ADVANCED SEARCH at the top of the screen.

Exiting

  1. Click END SESSION.
  2. Click on the browser's HOME at the top of the screen to return to the UW-Madison Libraries Web site.

Getting Help

  1. Click \ HELP for on-screen help.
