Ask a Librarian

Searching

  1. Select database from the UW-Madison Libraries Web site.
  2. Click on SEARCH. (BASIC SEARCH is the default).
  3. Type a word or phrase in the SEARCH FOR box.
  4. Click on SEARCH.

Combining Terms

Use OR to connect similar terms. OR broadens your search.

Example: dickens or boz

Use AND to connect separate concepts. AND narrows your search.

Example: dickens and trollope

Truncating Terms

Use * to replace one or more characters at the end of a search term.

Example: theat* (retrieves theater, theatre, theatrical)

Proximity Searching

Use quotation marks to find words next to each other in that order.

Example: "barnaby rudge"

Author Searching

  1. Change ALL FIELDS (W/TEXT)drop down box to ARTICLE AUTHOR and type in author's name in either order.
    Example: susan bernstein
  2. Click on SEARCH.

Journal Searching

To find a specific article:

  1. Change ALL FIELDS (W/TEXT) drop down box to ARTICLE TITLE and type in the article title or words in title.
    Example: charles dickens and the movement for sanitary reform
  2. Click on SEARCH.

To browse a specific journal:

  1. Click on JOURNALS tab at the top of the screen.
  2. Scroll through list and click on the desired journal.
  3. Click on SELECT A VOLUME and highlight desired volume.
  4. Click on NOW SELECT AN ISSUE and highlight desired issue.

Displaying Search Results

  1. Use the SCROLL BAR to move through records on the page.
  2. Click on NEXT> or <PREV to display more records.
  3. Click on VIEW PDF or article title to display the full text of the article.

Selecting Records

  1. Click in the box to the left of the record or click on MARK ALL to mark for later printing, downloading or emailing.
  2. Click on SAVE MARKED RESULTS.

Saving Search Results

Downloading One Article

  1. Click VIEW PDF.
  2. Click OK to view PDF.
  3. Insert removal storage device (i.e., flashdrive, memory stick, 3 1/2" disk ...).
  4. Click on DISK image in image window.
  5. Click OK.
  6. Type the disk drive letter, the filename and extension in the FILE NAME box.
    Example: a:myfile.pdf
  7. Click on SAVE.
  8. Click on X at upper right to close window.

Downloading Records

  1. Click on EMAIL/EXPORT SAVED RESULTS.
  2. Click in circle next to PRINTER FRIENDLY FORMAT.
  3. Click on EXPORT.
  4. Use browser save function.
  5. Type the disk drive letter, the filename and extension in the FILE NAME box.
    Example: a:myfile.txt
  6. Click on SAVE.
  7. Click on X at upper right to close window.

Emailing Search Results

  1. Click on EMAIL/EXPORT SAVED RESULTS.
  2. Click in circle next to E-MAIL.
  3. Click on EXPORT.
  4. Type email address in TO: box.
  5. Click on EMAIL RESULTS.
  6. Click on RESULTS to return to results list.

Beginning a New Search

  1. Click on SEARCH.

Click on HELP for on-screen help.

For further assistance, consult library staff.

Exiting

  1. Click on HOME at the top of the screen to return to the UW-Madison Libraries Web site.
