Ask a Librarian

Searching

  1. Select a database from the UW-Madison Libraries Web site.
  2. Type a word or phrase in the SEARCH FOR box.
    (Optional) Select a field under SEARCH WITHIN.
    (Optional) Select DATE RANGE.
    (Optional) Select TOPIC.
  3. Click SEARCH.

Combining Terms

Use OR to connect similar terms. OR broadens your search.

Example: brass OR bronze

Use AND to connect separate concepts. AND narrows your search.

Example: iron AND steel

Truncating Terms

Use * to replace on or more characters at the end of a search term.

Example: fertilize* (retrieves fertilize, fertilizer, fertilized)

Proximity Searching

Use quotation marks to find words next to each other in that order. The NEAR operator is not available at this time.

Example: "controlled release"

Combining Search Sets

Author Searching

  1. Enter the author's last name in the SEARCH FOR box and select AUTHOR from the SEARCH WITHIN options.
  2. Click SEARCH.

Chemical Structure or Substructure Searching (e-EROS only)

  1. Click STRUCTURE SEARCH.
  2. Click SUBSTRUCTURE or STRUCTURE(EXACT)in the PLEASE CHOOSE drop-down menu. A Java applet will open. You may choose a different structure editor when accessing e-EROS outside campus libraries.
  3. Draw substructure or structure in the drawing window.
  4. Click EDIT QUERY ATOM (A button), then click P-TABLE button to select a different atom.
    Note: P-TABLE window also contains additional atom groups:
    • A: Any atom besides H
    • Q: Any atom besides H and C
    • X: Any halogen (not a valid query with Java applet search)
    • R: R atom (not a valid query with Java applet search)
  5. Click OK to accept atom selection.
  6. Click OK to close DEFINE QUERY ATOM window.
  7. Click TRANSFER.
  8. Click BEGIN SEARCH.

Reaction Searching (e-EROS only)

  1. Click STRUCTURE SEARCH.
  2. Clickt REACTION (SUBSTR) in the PLEASE CHOOSE drop-down menu.
  3. Draw reactant(s), reaction arrow, and product(s) in drawing window as described above.
    Note: You must include the reaction arrow and at least one reactant or one product.
  4. Click TRANSFER.
  5. Click BEGIN SEARCH.

Displaying Search Results

Kirk-Othmer:

  1. Move through results.
  2. Click HTML to view article.
  3. Browse the article table of contents or use <CTRL F> to find your search terms within the text.

e-EROS:

  1. Move through results.
  2. Click SECTION TEXT IN HTML to view article.
  3. Browse the article table of contents or use <CTRL F> to find your search terms within the text.

Selecting Records

Saving Search Results

Kirk-Othmer:

  1. Insert removable storage device. (i.e. flash drive, memory stick, 3 1/2" disk...)
  2. Click PDF to display pdf version.
  3. Click SAVE TO DISK.
  4. Type your disk drive and filename in the FILE NAME box.
    Example: a:\myfile.pdf
  5. Click SAVE.

  • Click ADVANCED PRODUCT SEARCH in the menu at the top right of the screen.

e-EROS:

  • Click STRUCTURE SEARCH or TEXT SEARCH at the top of the screen.

Exiting

  • Click the browser's HOME to return to the UW-Madison Libraries Web site.

  • Click HELP for on-screen help.
