Create a Bibliography with EndNote Web

  1. Click on Format tab at the top of the screen.
  2. Select desired group or All references in my library from the References: drop-down menu.
  3. Select desired output style from the Bibliographic style: drop-down menu.
    OPTIONAL: If your desired output style is not a choice, click on Customize this list and add the style to your favorites.
  4. Select desired file format from the File format: drop-down menu.
    RTF (rich text file) is the appropriate file format for Word documents.
  5. Click Save, Email or Preview and Print as desired and follow on-screen directions.

Cite While You Write

Use the EndNote Web Cite While You Write Plug-in to insert references, and format citations and bibliographies automatically while you write your papers in Word. To download plug-ins, log into the EndNote Web site in a Web browser, click the Download Installers link at the bottom of any page.

Inserting cited references in your Word document

  1. With your Word document open, place the cursor in the location where the citation should appear.
  2. Select EndNote Web at the top of the screen (in some word processors it will appear under the Tools menu).
  3. Click on Find Citations
    This tool searches your entire library (i.e., all reference fields for all references in all groups)
  4. Enter a search term in the Find Citations box to find the reference or references to insert.
  5. Click on Search.
  6. Select the desired reference. To insert multiple references in one citation, click each reference while holding the Ctrl key.
  7. Click Insert.

The citation appears at the cursor location, formatted according to the bibliographic style specified. The reference information is also automatically added to the bibliography at the end of your manuscript.

Create a Bibliography with EndNote Desktop

  1. Highlight the desired records for your bibliography.
  2. Select desired output style from the drop-down Style menu.
  3. Click Edit, then Copy Formatted.
    A formatted bibliography of your desired records is copied to your clipboard.
  4. Go to your word processor and paste the formatted bibliography into your document.

EndNote Cite While You Write

Use the EndNote Cite While You Write (CWYW) Plug-in to insert references, and format citations and bibliographies automatically while you write your papers in Word. The EndNote plug-in should be added when you install EndNote on your computer.

Inserting References in your MS Word document

  1. With your MS Word document open, place the cursor in the location where the citation should appear.
  2. Select Find Citation(s) from the EndNote menu.
    This tool searches your entire library (i.e., all reference fields for all references in all folders)
  3. Enter a search term in the FIND: box to find the reference or references to insert.
  4. Click SEARCH.
  5. Select the desired reference. To insert multiple references in one citation, click each reference while holding the Ctrl key.
  6. Click INSERT.

Alternate procedures:

  1. Open MS Word document and EndNote.
  2. CLICK-and-DRAG (or COPY-and-PASTE) a record from EndNote into your MS Word document.

When Instant Formatting is turned on the citation appears at the cursor location, formatted according to the bibliographic style specified. The reference information is also automatically added to the bibliography at the end of your manuscript.

Instant Formatting can cause some problems with longer Word documents. To disable this feature and format your bibliography when you are done writing your paper:

  1. Open the Word EndNote menu.
  2. Click Preferences, then GENERAL.
  3. Deselect Enable Instant Formatting on new Word documents. You can always turn it back on if you decide you want to do so.
  4. When you are ready to format your entire document, go to the Word EndNote menu and click Update Citations and Bibliography.

To add specific page numbers to your in-text citation:

  1. Highlight the desired in-text citation in document.
  2. Click Edit Citations.
  3. Enter page number in either the Pages: or Suffix: box.
    Pages: In order to print, the CITED PAGES field must be listed in the citation template and/or footnote template of your output style.
    Suffix: Enter text here to print after the citation text. Enter page numbers here if you always want them to print after the citation.
  4. Click OK.Your in-text citation now includes the page number and is unformatted.
  5. Click Update Citations and Bibliography to reformat this citation in your word document.
