CIAO: Columbia International Affairs Online

A comprehensive source for theory and research in international affairs. It includes full- text of working papers from 58 organizations, full-text of the proceedings of conferences sponsored by 17 organizations, abstracts from eleven major international affairs journals, and abstracts and/or reviews of books. More than 280 full-color regional, political, and country maps are also included.


CountryWatch

A combination of textual and statistical sources of more than 190 countries. Lengthy Country Reviews give a complete historical, political, economic, investment, social, and environmental overview of each country. The DataWatch portion allows you to display, cross-tabulate and download numeric data about the countries. Country Wire provides access to full articles from 12 international news services. The Map Gallery supplies physical/political maps in a variety of sizes and formats. In addition, thematic maps cover a variety of cultural and economic subjects. The Forecast section is not part of our subscription.


Current World Information Knowledgebase (CWIK)

A directory of leaders and facts about their countries and organizations. It also provides addresses, FAX and telephone numbers, and some e-mail addresses for reaching government leaders, foreign embassies in the United States, and U. S. embassies abroad.


Global Newsbank

A database of full-text news articles from more than 1,500 international sources, including translated broadcasts, news agency transmissions, wire services, newspapers, periodicals and government documents. Covers Africa, Asia, Europe, the former Soviet Union, the Pacific Rim, Central and South America, and the Middle East.


Political Risk Yearbook

This provides extensive economic, demographic, and social background on 106 countries. It has 18-month and five-year forecasts of risk to international business for each country. Its risk studies are based on the Prince forecasting model, covering international business. Each study focuses on finding developing markets, determining currency movements, preparing for capital investments, or making judgments about corporate security. Individual country studies feature accurate and rigorous analysis of present and future political and economic conditions. Each report follows a standardized format, making comparisons between countries easier.


Public Affairs Information Service (PAIS)

PAIS indexes more than 900 journals, books, government documents, statistical compilations, committee reports, directories, serials, reports of public, intergovernmental and private organizations, and most other forms of printed literature from all over the world. Its subject matter covers public policy, social policy, and the social sciences in general. A brief note indicating content is sometimes included.


SourceOECD

This is the online library of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, a grouping of 30 member countries promoting economic development in a globalized, market economy. Its work covers economic and social issues, macroeconomics, trade, education, development, and science and innovation. Choose a specific country from the drop-down menu for "Country Reports and Tables."


World Development Indicators (WDI)

The WDI, compiled by The World Bank, contains statistical data for more than 550 development indicators and time series data from 1960-2000 for more than 200 countries. Data includes social, economic, financial, natural resources, and environmental indicators. Results can be scaled, indexed against a particular year, viewed by percentage change, and charted. It is possible to choose various export options in standard formats such Excel. Minor updates to the database take place throughout the year, with updates to GNI and population data in September.


World News Connection

A major source of English language translations of foreign media. New information is entered into WNC every government business day. Generally, this information is available within 24 - 72 hours from the time of original publication or broadcast. Compiled by the U.S. government from thousands of non-U.S. media sources, the information in WNC covers significant socioeconomic, political, scientific, technical, and environmental issues and events. Most articles are full-text.

Amnesty International

Amnesty International's mission is to undertake research and political action focused on preventing and ending human rights abuses. AI's online "Library" links to publications, news releases, and an archive of "Annual Reports." Search by specific country, region, sub-region, or by themes (e.g. women, refugees, children juveniles, prisoners of conscience, etc.).


Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) World Fact Book

Contains overviews of every country in the world. Includes brief data on geography, people, government, economy, membership in international organizations, communications, and defense forces. Maps and flags may be viewed in various formats.


International Monetary Fund (IMF)

The IMF is an international organization of 184 member countries that aims to expand world trade and to provide temporary financial assistance to member countries. Click on "Country Info" for press releases and downloadable data charts detailing IMF financial transactions.


Library of Congress - Country Studies (published 1988-1998)

Includes in-depth analyses of countries prepared by the Federal Research Division of the Library of Congress under the Country Studies/Area Handbook Program sponsored by the Department of the Army. Information for 100 countries is currently available. Dates vary; see the "Research Completed" date at the beginning of each study or the "Data as of " date on the end of each section of text.


United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)

Access a wide range of full-text publications, reports, and downloadable statistics detailing UNESCO's efforts in 5 main categories: education, communication & information, culture, natural sciences, and social & human sciences. Follow the links "Documents," "Information Services," or "Statistics."


U.S. Department of State

The Department of State's Web site provides timely, global access to official U.S. foreign policy information, including its "Background Notes," which detail the political conditions in foreign countries and are frequently updated by regional bureaus.


The World Bank

The World Bank supports a broad range of market-based and social programs aimed at reducing poverty and improving living standards in the developing world. The links "Countries & Regions," "Data & Statistics," and "Publications" lead to short country profiles, full-text reports, maps, and downloadable data. This site also provides free, limited access to the World Development Indicators (WDI) database (available as a licensed electronic resource through the UW Libraries). The free version includes 54 (out of 550) indicators for 207 countries and 18 groups, spanning 5 years (1996-2000).
