Encore

MADISON, Wis. -- In a celebration of the first 40 poets featured in the Parallel Press chapbook series, Encore: More of Parallel Press Poets brings the authors together in one collection that also allows readers to explore the poets' thought processes.

The Parallel Press, an imprint of the UW-Madison Libraries, first began producing its poetry chapbooks in 1999. The chapbook series is a modern update on the 18th- and 19th-century publications of the same size that contained popular literature such as songs, poems, political treatises, folk stories, jokes and religious tracts, and were typically sold by peddlers for a penny.

Each author, from Andrea Potos, whose poetry launched the chapbook series, to Ron Wallace, the last featured poet of 2005, contributes one poem in Encore. In addition, the poets provide first-person accounts of the experience of writing their poems.

"This collection is wonderfully representative of the chapbook series. The poems both clash and mesh. Some of the poems look inward at timeless and universal themes -- while others stand out in the world of a specific time and place," writes Ken Frazier, director of UW-Madison Libraries, in the Foreword to Encore.
