The following list of database vendors include instructions for moving citations into RefWorks. If no filter exists for a particular vendor, we recommend you look for alternative export or save options. Click here and then click on suggestions on alternate saving methods.

Note: Citation information for webpages on the free web (e.g., Internet Movie Database, government webpages) can be moved into RefWorks using the RefGrab-It tool. See Instructions for installing and using RefGrab-It.

Add Citations Manually

  1. Select Add New Reference from the References dropdown menu.
    (Optional) Select desired citation style from View fields used by: drop down menu.
    Fields required for that citation style will be indicated with a checkmark.
  2. Select desired folder from the In Folder(s) dropdown menu
  3. Select appropriate reference type from the Ref Type dropdown menu.
  4. Enter the information from your reference in the appropriate fields.
  5. Click on Save.

Import EndNote Citations into RefWorks

Note: RefWorks has a feature that will allow you to upload your EndNote versions 8 through 11 library directly into RefWorks. All other versions of EndNote will require you to export the records from EndNote and import them into RefWorks (see instructions at the end of this section).

EndNote 8,9,X, or X1 users only

  1. Select Import EndNote V8+ Database from the References drop-down menu.
  2. Click on Browse and select the desired EndNote library
    Note: Currently there is a 25 MB import limit on the size your EndNote library.
    Optional: Select a folder into which your EndNote library will be imported.
  3. Click on Import
  4. Your records should automatically appear in the Last Imported folder or folder selected.

    In EndNote version 7 or older

  1. Click on Edit and select Output Styles.
  2. Select RefMan(RIS) Export.
    If you do not see this style, click on Open Style Manager. Click in the box to the left of this style. Close the Style Manager window and repeat step 1 above.
  3. Click on References and Show All to export the entire library.
    OR
    Select specific references and click on Reference and Show Selected.
  4. Click on File and Export.
  5. Type your disk drive, the filename in the File Name box.
  6. Select Text from the Save As type dropdown menu.
  7. Click on Save.

In RefWorks

  1. Login to your RefWorks database if you have not already done so.
  2. Click on References and Import at the top of the screen.
  3. Select Desktop Biblio. Mgt. Soft. from the Import Filter/Data Source drop down menu.
  4. Select EndNote from the Database dropdown menu.
  5. At the Import Data from the following Text File box click on the Browse button to select the file name of your saved records.
  6. Click on Import.
  7. Your citation(s) will automatically be imported into the Last Imported Folder.

You may view the records or move them to the folder of your choice.

Import RefWorks Citations into EndNote

In RefWorks

  1. Login to your RefWorks database if you have not already done so.
  2. Click on References and Export at the top of the screen.
  3. Click in the radio button for All References or References From: to specify a folder.
  4. Select Bibliographic Software (EndNote, Reference Manager, ProCite) from the Export Format: choices.
  5. Click on Export to Text File...
  6. Click on File and Save As.
  7. Type your disk drive, the filename in the File Name box.
  8. Select Text from the Save As Type dropdown menu.
  9. Click on Save.

In EndNote

  1. Open your EndNote Library and click on File and Import.
  2. Click on Choose File at Import Data File: and select your text file.
  3. Select Refman RIS from the Import Option: drop down menu.
  4. Click on Import

Facilitates collaboration with its multi-user access and simultaneous editing of an account, while also offering, Read Only access of the same data.

RefShare is an add-on module to RefWorks that provides users with a quick and easy way to share their database (or folders) further enhancing collaborative research. Users can share their RefWorks references with both members of their own institution and globally with any researcher having Internet access. 

EndNote: Facilitates collaboration with its creation of a mini-EndNote Traveling Library within a wordprocessor document, as well as being able to pack PDFs within a library rather than just linking to them in a different location.

EndNote Web: Facilitates collaboration with sharing of groups with other EndNote Web users.
