Moving Webpage Information into RefWorks using RefGrab-It
RefGrab-It is a tool that works with your browser to capture citation information from web pages. You can then view and import that data into your RefWorks account.
Installing RefGrab-it as a Bookmarklet
Windows Users
Internet Explorer:
- In Internet Explorer, make sure Links is selected and displayed (View, Toolbars, Links).
- Login to your RefWorks account.
- Select Tools and RefGrab-It.
- Right mouse click on RefGrab-It and select Add to Favorites.
- Locate the Links folder and select it. RefGrab-It will appear in the Name area.
- Click on OK.
- You may get a security challenge telling you that you may be adding something that is unsafe. Please say "yes".
If you are unable to drag and drop the link, make sure your toolbar is unlocked (View, Toolbars, deselect Lock the Toolbars).
Firefox:
- Make sure your bookmarks toolbar is selected and displayed (View, Toolbar, Bookmarks Toolbar).
- Select Tools and RefGrab-It.
- Right mouse click on RefGrab-It bookmarklet link and select Bookmark This Link.
- The Add Bookmark box opens and RefGrab-It should appear in the name box. Click the Create-In drop-down menu to expand list. Click on Bookmarks Toolbar.
- Drag and drop the RefGrab-It link to your personal toolbar.
Note: RefGrab-It is not compatible with Netscape at this time.
Mac Users
Firefox and Netscape
- Select Tools, RefGrab-It.
- Drag and drop the RefGrab-It link to your browser toolbar.
Using RefGrab-It
You may need to temporarily disable any pop-up blockers while accessing the RefGrab-It results.
- Login to your RefWorks database if you have not already done so.
- When viewing a desired web page click on the RefGrab-It link in your toolbar or bookmark list.
- The RefGrab-It window will open with references it has found.
- You can expand or collapse the results by clicking on the plus or minus icon.
- To view the full reference, click on the Show Details link.
- To export a single reference, select the record and click on the export to RefWorks icon.
- To export multiple references, select the records (or the Select All in Section option(s) or the All option at the top of the list to include all references on the page regardless of section) and click Import to RefWorks button at the top of the page.
- Your citation(s) will automatically be imported into the Last Imported Folder.
You may now view your citation(s) and move them to the folder of your choice.
