Course Reserves & Materials

Ask a Librarian

How can the libraries help me provide students access to course materials?

Library Course Reserves is one of many campus services that can help you connect your students to course materials. The libraries are also glad to assist you with finding materials to make available to students in other ways. Arrange for a consultation with a librarian to talk about how the libraries can best help you.

Libraries can help you

  • Determine if course material is freely available to students online through a library purchase or a as a public domain or creative commons work.
  • Make course material available for limited circulation by placing it on physical reserve in a library collection.
  • Create "E-Reserves" with convenient and secure access to online materials.
  • Host material in a secure online environment that limits access to enrolled students.
  • Advise on copyright and fair use issues related to course packs or online access to materials.

Place Materials on Reserve

Many campus libraries offer reserves services and have reserves facilities. Policies and procedures may vary from library to library. Materials such as books, textbooks, articles, videos, solution sets, and exams that an instructor has selected for use by students enrolled in a specific course are placed "on reserve" at the UW-Madison Libraries. Contact a library's reserves service for arranging access to print, electronic and audio-visual items through reserves.

Here are quick links to some campus library pages with information for faculty/instructors regarding reserves.

If your departmental library is not listed consult the Campus Libraries page or contact us.

My UW-Madison is the primary access point to reserves using Library Course Pages, with links to E-Reserves as well as listings, via the library catalog, of materials (print and audio-visual) on reserve in library facilities.

Other instructional resources can also be customized for your Library Course Page, such as selected journal databases and Web sites, tips and techniques for effective library research, and contact information for personal assistance. Instructors interested in having additional Library Course Page material developed may contact: Sarah McDaniel, Library and Information Literacy Coordinator at 262-4308, or fill out this request form and a librarian will contact you.
