Ask a Librarian

UW-Madison Libraries use the campus authentication service, called NetID, to provide access to our licensed resources from off campus.

If you encounter problems logging in to a library resource with your NetID, contact the Library Technology Group Help Desk, (608) 262-8880, or consult off-campus online access for more information.

The DoIT Help Desk,, (608) 264-4357, provides additional help for NetID problems.

11-Digit ID Numbers

Some library services (the Library Catalog, Article & Book Delivery, etc.) allow you login with your 11-Digit ID number in addition to NetID.

Most ID number login problems are a result of typing in only 10 of the 11 digits. The 11th digit is the issue code and is not part of prominent number on the card. The issue code indicates the number of IDs that have been assigned to an individual (1st ID = 0, 2nd ID = 1, etc.) Only one ID - the most recently issued - may be valid at any time.

Current ID

Current ID cards feature 10 digits. The issue code - listed separately - is the 11th digit. If you have not yet received your campus ID card but have your 10 digit ID number, try a zero for the 11th digit.

The 11 digit number is found above the barcode and is repeated between the 'b' and the 'a' below the barcode.

Blocked ID/Login Problem

You may be blocked from logging in to access your Library Catalog account, to place requests, or to be presented with the specific databases your library allows you to search. Some reasons for a blocked account are:

  • An item you have checked out has been recalled by another patron and is overdue
  • You have more than five lost items on your record
  • Your ID has been blocked until the local address is updated
  • You have 250 or more items checked out
  • Your ID has expired
  • You did not enter in 11 digits
  • You may need to get a General Library System card

If you have questions about a blocked account call the Memorial Library Circulation Office at (608) 263-7360, Monday-Friday 8:00 AM-4:00 PM or via email.

ID Lost / Replaced

If you lose your ID, contact the Circulation Office immediately to report it. Staff will block your ID so that someone else cannot charge items out on it. Items charged on your ID are your responsibility.

If you replace your ID, please present your new ID to staff at any Circulation Desk so that the new number can be entered into the system. This will prevent delays in accessing our electronic resources and borrowing materials.
