What is it?

EndNote for Windows or Mac is a robust citation management program which you can purchase with an educational discount from DoIT. With EndNote you can:

  • Create a personal research database and organize references, images and PDFs
  • Import citations from online databases as you search
  • Format bibliographies instantly while you write
  • Share information with other EndNote users

Getting Started

  1. Select Custom when installing EndNote, in order to include the full set of:
    • Additional Connection Files
    • Additional Import Filters
    • Additional Bibliographical Output Styles.
  2. Before using your EndNote Library, import Journal Lists in order to enable journal abbreviations.
    • From the EndNote menu, select Tools then Define Term Lists
    • Click on Journals, then Import List....
    • A window will open containing a variety of subject-oriented term lists. Select any term lists that are related to your research. Then click Open.
    • Note: If you already have citations in your EndNote Library, you must first delete any existing term lists before completing the steps above.

Customizing EndNote for UW-Madison

For users of EndNote X2 and newer that are affiliated with UW-Madison, there are several settings within EndNote that will allow you to connect to full text through our library subscriptions.

EndNote X2:

  1. Open your EndNote Library.
  2. Click EDIT, then click PREFERENCES.
  3. Click URLS & LINKS.
  4. Check ENABLE OPEN URL if not already checked.
  5. In the OpenURL Path box, enter:
    http://sfx.wisconsin.edu/wisc
  6. In the OPEN URL ARGUMENTS box, replace =ISI:WOS with =ISI:endnote.
  7. Click OK.

EndNote X3 and newer:

  1. Open your EndNote Library.
  2. Click EDIT, then click PREFERENCES.
  3. Click URLS & LINKS on the left side of the Preferences window.
  4. In the OPEN URL ARGUMENTS box, replace =ISI:WOS with =ISI:endnote in "?sid=ISI:WOS&..."
  5. Click FIND FULL TEXT on the left side of the Preferences window.
  6. Select all full text options.
  7. In the OpenURL Path box, enter:
    http://sfx.wisconsin.edu/wisc
  8. In the Authenticate with URL box, enter:
    http://ezproxy.library.wisc.edu/login?url=http://www.library.wisc.edu/
  9. Click OK.
