Gaylord Schanilec is a master fine printer and wood engraver. Under his imprint Midnight Paper Sales he has produced over forty limited edition books. Schanilec will talk about the intersection
of science and art. He’ll describe his research and use of historical documents as well as nature specimens gathered from his property and nearby Lake Pepin. Schanilec’s focus will be on three recent books: Lac des Pleurs, Mayflies of the Driftless Region, and Sylvae. Each of these majestic artist’s books reflect his abiding interest in ecology, natural history, and landscape.

An exhibition, Collected Specimens: Gaylord Schanilec and Midnight Paper Sales, will be on view at the Kohler Art Library January 15–March 13, 2016.

Funded by the Leonora G. Bernstein Artists’ Book Endowment and sponsored by Kohler Art Library, UW–Madison Libraries.
