Computer Access for Visitors

Login-Free Workstations

Most campus libraries have workstations for short-term use that do not require a login. Some locations also have computers that require a NetID to log in.

Workstations Available for Library-Issued NetID Use

Some computer locations in campus libraries are provided by the DoIT InfoLab program and have software licensed only for students, faculty, and staff. Users with library-issued NetIDs should not use these computers.

Workstations at the following locations are available for you to use with a library-issued NetID:

  • Memorial Library – All workstations in the library except for room 140.
  • Steenbock Library – Four workstations immediately inside the second floor entrance.
  • Art Library – All workstations except the three Macintoshes in the main room.
  • Ebling Library – The second computer table from the library main entrance, in front of the service desk

What is a Library-Issued NetID?

  • This is a NetID that has been issued by the libraries to someone who is not a student/staff/faculty member, granting them access to some campus resources.

Note that campus refers to these NetIDs broadly as “affiliate NetIDs.” Departments can also issue these types of NetIDs to their guests. Any of the limitations outlined below for library-issued NetIDs also pertain to affiliate NetIDs and department-issued NetIDs.

What Does a Library-Issued NetID Provide Access To?

  • A library-issued NetID allows you to log in to designated library computers.
  • A library-issued NetID does not provide access to your library account, access to electronic resources and databases from off-campus, or access to campus-licensed software such as Adobe, Microsoft, etc.

Do I Need a Library-Issued NetID to Use Library Resources?

  • No, a library-issued NetID is optional. Only library visitors who would like to use library computers for extended periods should request a NetID. Login-free computers are available for short-term use.
  • You may also use a personal device to access library resources over UW-Madison’s wireless network without a NetID.

How do I get a Library-Issued NetID?

  • Contact Circulation Support to request a library-issued NetID. Library Card and Extended Day Pass holders will be invited to create an library-issued NetID automatically.
  • You will receive an email from “Manifest Groups System.” Complete the linked form within 14 days using the process outlined here: NetID for Affiliates – Registration Process (Patron View) (wisc.edu)
  • If you think you have been issued a NetID in the past, click “I have a NetID” and contact the DoIT Help Desk. Failure to link to an existing NetID will create problems that have to be resolved manually and may result in lost data.
  • The library-issued NetID creation process can take up to 3 days, so we advise you to complete it before your visit.
