This data set contains standardized data for blockholders of 1,913 companies. The data was cleaned from biases and mistakes usually observed in the standard source for this particular type of data. Blockholders’ data is reported by firm for the period 1996-2001.

CBOE Indexes (WRDS)
The CBOE (Chicago Board Options Exchange) Volatility Index® (VIX®) is a key measure of market expectations of near-term volatility conveyed by S&P 500 stock index option prices. The VIX was introduced in 1993 by Professor Robert E. Whaley of Duke University. The New VIX is based on S&P 500 index option prices and incorporates information from the volatility “skew” by using a wider range of strike prices rather than just at-the-money series.

Corporate Restructurings – Bankruptcies (Thomson Reuters via SDC Platinum)
Subscription includes the Full Detail database and the Limited Detail database. The Full Detail database (1988-present, updated monthly) provides over 200 items on all U.S. public companies that have $10 million or more in assets and have filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection or companies with assets over $50 million that have had a default or an exchange offer at a substantial discount to face value. The Limited Detail database (1980-1988, not updated) covers all U.S. public companies with assets of $1 million or more that have filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

Directory of Resources for Researchers (UW-Madison)
This Directory contains searchable information — provided by resource owners and service providers — about broadly shared UW-Madison resources and services that support research in the sciences, arts, and humanities. The Directory launched in June 2017 with a partial inventory. DMEF Academic Data: Direct Marketing Educational Foundation (WRDS)
Four individual data sets, each containing customer buying history for about 100,000 customers of nationally known catalog and non-profit database marketing businesses are available through DMEF to approved academic researchers for use within academic situations. Corporate names are anonymous and customer names and addresses have been removed, but the business type is indicated. ZIP codes have been retained (if possible) to provide a potential link to Census ZIP level demographics.

Dow Jones Averages & Total Return Indexes (WRDS)
The Dow Jones Averages are comprised of The Daily and Monthly Dow Jones Composite (DJA), The Dow Jones Industrial (DJI), The Dow Jones Transportation (DJT), The Dow Jones Utility (DJU), the Dow 10, and The Dow 5. The Dow Jones Total Return Indexes are introduced by Dow Jones Indexes as part of the Dow Jones Total Market Index Series. The Total Return Indexes account for reinvested dividends. Event Study by WRDS (WRDS)
The event studies are used to analyze the market reaction to firm specific and market-wide events using either returns or volume around the time when event occurred. Some examples include earnings announcements, M&As, new capital issues, and announcements of macroeconomic variables such as unemployment or trade deficit. Event studies are also used to measure the impact on the value of a firm resulting from a change in the regulatory environment or to assess the damages. In most applications, the focus is on the effect of event on the price of a particular class of firm securities, primarily common equity. WRDS Event Study allows running event studies on equities, plots charts on Mean Cumulative Returns with significance intervals, and also outputs data used behind the scenes. Forthcoming studies include: Daily Event Studies based on Capital IQ Key Development events; Intra Day Second-by-Second Event Studies based on TAQ data; International Event Studies; and Long-Run Event Studies.

Eventus (Cowan Research via WRDS)
Eventus performs event studies using data read directly from CRSP stock databases or pre-extracted from any source. The Eventus system includes utility programs to convert calendar dates to CRSP trading day numbers, convert CUSIP identifiers to CRSP permanent identification numbers, and extract event study cumulative or compounded abnormal returns for cross-sectional analysis. WRDS Financial Ratio is a latest addition to the WRDS analytics platform. It’s a web based engine that delivers over 70 pre-calculated financial ratios for all U.S. companies across eight different categories (Valuation, Liquidity, Profitability, and etc). Researchers can easily obtain both firm-level and industry-level ratios through point-and-click on the web query. This product can be used by researchers as a convenient tool to obtain firm-level and/or industry-level ratios as characteristics for controls in empirical research.

New Issues databases provide authoritative coverage of global equity issues, Eurobonds, U.S. Private Placements, and more — giving you the same critical information used by leading investment banks and top financial publications. Infogroup (WRDS)
Infogroup gathers geographic location-related business and residential data from various public data sources, such as local yellow pages, credit card billing data, etc. Subscription includes the Historical Business (Academic version) database which starts in 1997 and largely focuses on US sectors. The Historical Business data is a calendar year-end snapshot of local business data. It contains business identification, location, industry, corporation hierarchy, employment, sales, and other fields.

Intraday Indicators by WRDS (WRDS)
The WRDS Intraday Database contains daily stock market indicators obtained from NYSE TAQ data. At daily frequency, it provides, per stock, variables such as: Volume (before opening, during trading hours and after closing), Returns during market hours, Lee-Ready buy/sell trade volume, Variance ratios, Lambda (price impact coefficient), Spreads, Intraday volatility, Value weighted average price, etc. The objective is to facilitate research by overcoming extensive programming time and user’s computational limitations on calculating these indicators using complex TAQ data. Another advantage is the ability to use many of these variables as “right-hand-side” variables. It requires license to NYSE TAQ data. Data begins in 1993.

ISSM: The Institute for the Study of Security Markets (WRDS)
The Institute for the Study of Security Markets (ISSM) database contains tick-by-tick data covering the NYSE and AMEX between 1983 and 1992, and NASDAQ between 1987 and 1992. Each year of data is divided into two files, one for trades and one for quotes.

Mergers & Acquisitions (LSEG via Workspace)
All corporate transactions involving at least 5% of the ownership of a company where the transaction was valued at $1 million or more (after 1992, deals of any value are covered) or where the value of the transaction was undisclosed. Public and private transactions are covered. Date coverage is from 1979 to present domestically and 1985 to present internationally.

MFLINKS: Mutual Fund Links (WRDS)
The MFLINKS tables provide a reliable means to join CRSP Mutual Fund (MFDB) data that covers mutual fund performance, expenses, and related information to equity holdings data in the TFN/CDA S12 datasets. Using MFLINKS allows a researcher to gather detail on holdings for either particular funds or fund families and groups of funds at specific points in time.

MSRB: Municipal Securities Rulemaking Board (WRDS)
As the primary regulator of the $3.7 trillion municipal security market, the MSRB collects and makes publicly available through its Electronic Municipal Market Access (EMMA). The trades represent transactions by investors and dealers in the over-the-counter market for municipal securities issued by municipal entities, including states, counties, cities and special tax districts.

Penn World Tables (WRDS)
The Penn World Tables provides national income accounts-type of variables converted to international prices. The homogenization of national accounts to a common numeraire allows valid comparisons of income among countries. Data comes from Alan Heston, Robert Summers and Bettina Aten, Penn World Table Version 6.1, Center for International Comparisons at the University of Pennsylvania, October 2002 (CICUP).

RateWatch
RateWatch Scholar Dataset includes deposit interest rate data for retail and business products from 2001 to May 2020. It has data on over 7500 financial institutions (including banks, credit unions, savings and loan associations, and others) in the U.S.

Analyze and measure the effectiveness of a firm’s R&D. Free to Academic institutions with current subscription to S&P Capital IQ Compustat. What is RQ? Research Quotient = percentage increase in revenue from a 1% increase in R&D. RQ is the output elasticity of R&D. RQ offers a universal, uniform, and reliable measure of a firm’s R&D productivity.

SEC Order Execution (WRDS)
On November 15, 2000, the SEC adopted new rules aimed at improving public disclosure of order execution and routing practices. As a result of Rule 11Ac1-5, market centers that trade national market system securities must make monthly, electronic disclosures of basic information concerning their quality of executions on a stock-by-stock basis. Data is available on WRDS through 2005, and is no longer updated.

TRACE: Trade Reporting and Compliance Engine (FINRA via WRDS)
TRACE is the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority’s (FINRA) over-the-counter (OTC) corporate bond market real-time price dissemination service. TRACE consolidates transaction data for all eligible corporate bonds – investment grade, high yield and convertible debt. As a result, individual investors and market professionals can access information on 100 percent of OTC activity representing over 99 percent of total U.S. corporate bond market activity in over 30,000 securities.
