Dogs 2x This Semester!
College Library and its partners have once again planned a series of finals events designed to reduce stress and provide much-needed support during the hectic days at the end of the semester. This year, thanks to AMWA, the UW-Madison chapter of the American Medical Women’s Association, the therapy canines of Dogs on Call will be visiting College Library twice to offer stress relief. The event sponsored by AMWA is scheduled for Monday, Dec. 10, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. on the first-floor of College Library. The dogs will be back the next week for their normally-scheduled visit on Monday, Dec. 17, from 4 to 6 p.m. Patrons will have TWO chances to experience the calming power of these special canines.
Finals events officially kick off with a giveaway from the Open Book Café. Once again the Memorial Union is offering a free pick-me-up for students on the last day of classes. From 7 p.m to 12:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 12, there will be free coffee,* tea, and hot chocolate available to library users.
The next day, Thursday, Dec. 13, the library will be hosting GUTS Study Day from 11 a.m to 6 p.m. A number of tutors will be on hand to help students prepare for finals in Chemistry, Math, Physics, and more. Another incentive is free snacks for those receiving help. This is also the day that 8 study tables in WisCEL can be reserved by students looking for a guaranteed place to study. The tables can be reserved starting at 8 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 13, and continuing until 11:59 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 18.
At midnight that evening the late night pilot shuttle service returns! Service starts in the early morning of Friday, Dec. 14 and runs through Thursday, Dec. 20. The shuttle runs between College Library and University Residence Halls every 30 minutes on the half hour from midnight to 6 a.m. This finals-week-only service supplements other late travel options, such as SAFEwalk (available at 608-262-5000 until 1 a.m.) and bus routes 80, 81, and 82, which aren’t available all night. For more information, see the UW Transportation website.
On Friday, Dec. 14, staff from UHS are again donating a selection of healthy snacks for students studying at the library. Look for fresh fruit, raisins, nuts, and bars to be available at all of the service desks (there’s one on each floor of the library) while supplies last. In addition, UHS offers a number of tips for relieving stress during this time of this semester.
As mentioned above, Dogs on Call will return for a second visit on Monday, Dec. 17, from 4 to 6 p.m. College Library’s 1″ button-maker will be available on Tuesday, Dec. 18. Feel free to download a Blank Button Template to create and print your own designs! (Just remember to print at 100% so they’re the right size.)
Finals activities conclude with a white-board question on Wednesday, Dec. 19. For those remaining on campus until the last day of finals, College Library will close at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 20. We begin our Winter Interim hours the next day – open 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays, closed weekends.
