Gale Digital Scholar Lab: Account Creation

In order to use the Gale Digital Scholar Lab tool you need to create an account so that you can save sets of content and the analyses that will be run on those content sets. You may use either a Google or Microsoft account. The directions below describe how to create an account using a UW-Madison Google Apps or Microsoft Office 365 account.

Step 1: Go to Gale Digital Scholar Lab

Go to Gale Digital Scholar Lab website.

Step 2: Authenticate Yourself with Your Google or Office 365 Account

When you first arrive at the Digital Scholar Lab website you will then see the Create Account option. Click on this link to begin the process.

Choose the Sign in with Google or Sign in with Microsoft option when prompted.

Next you will be asked which Google or Microsoft (Office 365) account you want to use. Enter the email address in the form of <NetID>@wisc.edu

After entering your <NetID>@wisc.edu and clicking on Next, your browser will be redirected to the campus login. Use your normal campus credentials at the UW-Madison Login page.

Note that if you have already logged into your campus account because you were off campus or have already been using other services like email, you will not be prompted to login again. Instead your browser will just be passed right back to the next step.

Step 3: Authorize Gale Cengage to Access Your Google or Office 365 Account

Once you have authenticated, the last step in the process requires that you tell Google or Microsoft that Gale Cengage has permission to use your account in a limited manner. Gale Cengage is the publisher of the Digital Scholar Lab website and some features require access to a cloud storage. Gale Cengage will use your Google Drive or Microsoft OneDrive cloud storage systems to save your Digital Scholar Lab content.

Click on Allow to complete the account creation process. This final step will create a Digital Scholar Lab account that is linked to your Google or Microsoft account for login functionality and storage capabilities.

This functionality to link your newly created Digital Scholar Lab account to your UW-Madison Google App or Microsoft Office 365 account is provided by an authentication and authorization scheme called OAuth, which enables a person to authenticate to one website using a user account from another one. In addition, OAuth provides mechanisms to specify and grant specific, limited permissions for accessing and sharing information across the two websites.
