Core Functions:

Welcoming, equitable, and inclusive environments

To ensure that spaces serve all members of the CDIS community equitably, Commons staff will design, implement, and transparently communicate policies and procedures that support the fluctuating space needs of CDIS stakeholders. The space is managed consistently and equitably based on policy. Community input about the commons will be collected and evaluated in an effort to respond to community needs. Policies are continuously assessed in order to allow for equitable spaces and services to stakeholders

Vibrant, community-engaged programming

Rooted in the Wisconsin Idea, the CDIS Learning Commons will feature a range of programming designed to serve the vision of CDIS and its stakeholders. Innovative and responsive programming will maximize use by welcoming new learners and researchers and fostering ongoing connection within the community.

To this end, the Commons staff will support student organizations by providing welcoming, equitably managed space for gatherings, events, and materials storage; amplifying group marketing for events; and assisting with recruitment, sustainable group management, and leadership transition. Wellness and community will be supported through partnered programming with campus and external organizations.

Contribute to and support grass-roots student belonging initiatives through intentional programming and management of CDIS Commons spaces

Laboratory Library for LIS professionals

Managing and training students to manage spaces of this nature supports the iSchool’s teaching mission to educate responsible leaders, critical thinkers, and creative innovators in the information professions; the CDIS Learning Commons will be a marquee space to train future information professionals.

Learner-centered information and research services

Under the direction of the CDIS Learning Commons Director, staff of the CDIS Learning Commons will provide point-of-need information and research services, drawing on best practices in library public service to support users’ information and discovery needs. The Commons will support users in identifying and locating relevant materials, wherever they may be.
