New database: RIPM Jazz Periodicals
We’re happy to announce we now have access to RIPM Jazz Periodicals, a full-text article database of over 138 jazz periodicals and magazines from the 20th and 21st centuries. Created in collaboration with the Institute of Jazz Studies of Rutgers University, RIPM Jazz Periodicals provides cover-to-cover access to historic jazz magazines such as Down Beat, Jazz, The Grackle, The Jazz Review, and Jazzbeat. Its initial focus was on U.S. publications, but RIPM has begun to expand the coverage globally and will continue adding titles. We’ve added it to the resources you’ll find listed on the Music subject page in Databases. You may also access it via our Library Catalog and the Key Links section on our homepage.
There are four ways of accessing journal content in RIPM Jazz Periodicals: Full-Text Search, Citation Search, Browse Mode, and Browse Tables of Content. Full-Text Search accesses all journal content via keyword(s) found in the original journal text. Citation Search searches author and article title records. RIPM has created citation records for titled journal content, including articles, news items, columns, and sheet music. Browse Mode permits users to view journal content page by page. Browse Tables of Content permits users to view each journal issue’s author-title records. The Help section includes search tips and tools, and video tutorials.
The mission of RIPM (Le Répertoire international de la presse musicale), founded in 1980 under the auspices of the International Musicological Society (IMS) and the International Association of Music Libraries, Archives, and Documentation Centres (IAML), is to preserve and to provide access to eighteenth-, nineteenth-, and twentieth-century periodical literature dealing with music and to facilitate and encourage research based on this neglected documentary resource. We’re longtime subscribers to RIPM Retrospective Index to Music Periodicals, an international annotated bibliography of writings on musical history and culture found in music periodicals published in seventeen countries between approximately 1800 and 1950, and we’re glad to add RIPM Jazz Periodicals to our growing list of online resources.
