Join 2025 Folk Musician-in-Residence Lyz Jaakola, Nitaa-Nagamokwe (The lady who knows how to sing), an enrolled member of the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa with Finnish-American heritage, who will share traditional and modern Ojibwe-Anishinaabe songs and knowledge from her life-long study of Native American music, especially Anishinaabe women’s music. Using an Indigenous Informance style, weaving story, visuals and song, she will be joined by her 18-year-old son to offer their 21st-century American Indian perspectives.
Our colleagues from Sustaining Scandinavian Folk Arts in the Upper Midwest, Center for the Study of Upper Midwestern Cultures, and Department of German, Nordic, and Slavic+ are presenting this event as part of celebrating 150 years of Scandinavian Studies on campus. The event will also be livestreamed on the Center for the Study of Upper Midwestern Cultures YouTube channel.
You may also learn more about Lyz, her music, and her UW residency by listening to the February 12 episode of Back to the Country on the WORT 89.9 FM Archive. Lyz joined Audio-Visual Preservation Archivist Nate Gibson to co-host a three-hour show about Indigenous Country Music, which featured a healthy dose of Mills Music Library holdings including Lyz’s recordings as well as rare Cuca Records releases. The radio show will be available for streaming online through February 25.
