Bernstein Book Arts Lecture on October 1 Features Sarah Bryant of Big Jump Press

September 23, 2024

The Kohler Art Library is pleased to announce the seventh annual Bernstein Book Arts Lecture, taking place on Tuesday, October 1, 2024, at 5:00 p.m. in Room L140 of the Elvehjem Building (located downstairs from the Art Library). Renowned book artist Sarah Bryant, founder of Big Jump Press, will deliver a talk titled “Acts of Translation: Bridging Disciplines through the Artists’ Book.”

Bryant’s lecture will focus on her latest project, Acts of Translation, an innovative series of interdisciplinary collaborations with an ecologist, a soprano, a photographer, a type designer, and an elementary school teacher. The project explores the common threads of human experience and the challenges of communication across disciplines.

Bryant established Big Jump Press in 2005 while pursuing her MFA in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Her career has taken her across the globe, from teaching at the Wells College Book Arts Center to conducting workshops throughout the United Kingdom. She now serves as an Associate Professor in the University of Alabama’s MFA Book Arts Program.

In conjunction with the lecture, the Kohler Art Library is hosting an exhibition, Carbon, Cotton, Bone: The Artists’ Books of Sarah Bryant, on view from September 3–December 13, 2024. The exhibition, generously supported by works loaned from the UW-Milwaukee Special Collections, provides an overview of Bryant’s work with Big Jump Press and her collaborators.

Established in 2015, the Bernstein Book Arts Lecture Series invites master book artists to share insights into their creative practice and engage with students in the UW Book Arts program. The series, underwritten by the generous support of Tracy Honn and Mark Bernstein, offers a unique opportunity to highlight the Kohler Art Library’s nationally recognized Artists’ Book Collection. Previous speakers include artists Gaylord Schanilec, Maureen Cummins, and Diane Fine.
