There Was No Lightning is a collection of essays by Harold Scheub, Evjue-Bascom Professor of Humanities in the Department of African Languages and Literature at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and one of the world’s leading scholars in African oral tradition and folklore. These essays examine South Africa’s racial history as expressed in the literary works of such authors as A.C. Jordan, J.M. Coetzee, and Bessie Head.
