Borrowing & Loan Policies

Books and other materials such as microfilm or DVDs from libraries across campus, from UW-System schools, or from InterLibrary Loan can be delivered for pickup at the Social Work Library.

University of Wisconsin faculty, students, and staff, must present a valid UW ID card in order to check out library materials at the Social Work Library. All other patrons must present either an annual fee card, a courtesy card, or runner card. For a complete explanation of the university libraries loan policies, please visit the main library page.

Loan Periods & Overdues

Most non-reserve items circulate to faculty and graduate students for the duration of a semester, with three renewals. For the same materials, undergraduates are usually given a 28 day due date and can use 2 renewals.

Reserve items are available for 2-hour, 3-day and/or 7-day loans with no renewals. Overdue Hourly Reserve items will incur $2/hour fines up to a maximum of $50. Daily Reserve items will incur $5/day fines.

Returning Materials

The library participates in the Open Return system on campus. It is perfectly acceptable (and encouraged) for patrons to return books at the Social Work Library or in our two book drops. All books from other campus libraries will be discharged at the Social Work Library and routed back to the correct library. NOTE: Madison Public Library books CANNOT be returned at the Social Work Library.

Our outdoor book drop is located in parking lot 21 which is next to the School of Social Work Building. Our indoor book drop is located on the first floor of the Social Work Building across from the elevator.

Renewal & Request Procedures

Patrons can renew materials through their library account or request library materials via the online catalog or at the Library’s Circulation Desk. For assistance please call (608) 263-3840. Checking Out Materials

To borrow materials, you must have a valid University of Wisconsin ID, or a card issued by Memorial Library on campus. (For more information, contact Circulation Support)

Borrowers are responsible for all materials checked out in their name.
